FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your dice balanced?

My dice are balanced enough for casual gaming. I wouldn't take them to a casino or anything. Do casinos let you bring your own dice? Probably not, come to think of it.

Are there flaws in your dice?

Sometimes. Like any handmade product, my dice will sometimes have small imperfections like mold marks, micro surface scratches, or tiny bubbles. These are cosmetic and will not affect the way they roll. If there is a larger imperfection but I still think the dice are pretty cool, I will put them up at a discount and make note in the description about the flaw.

Do you accept returns?

Sadly, no. As a small business, it's hard to take handmade products back, especially when they're being shipped. I try to take photos from as many angles as I can and in different lights so you get the best idea of what they look like in real life. That said, I want you to be happy with what you've bought, so if you have an issue, please get in contact with me at info@darkmatterdice.com and we'll see what we can work out.

Why are your dice so expensive?

Two reasons: materials and labour. Resin, silicone for molds, colourants, inclusions...they all add up. Head to your local hobby store to do some pricing and you'll see what I mean. The specialized equipment to ensure quality, bubble free castings is another expense on top of the raw materials. And then there's the work involved. All the dice you see in this shop are made by hand, which means between 4 and 8 hours of active work time. This doesn't count the time for the resin to cure (about 24 hours) or for the fresh dice to fully harden before polishing (about a week). I, like most people, want to be paid fairly for my labour, and luckily my boss (also me) agrees.

Do you know I can buy dice for $15 at the store??

Yes, I did in fact know that.

The set or die I wanted sold out. Will you make me one like it?

I am open to remaking certain designs, as long as I'm still able to source the materials. If there's something that you really want, send me a message and let me know! I'll do my best to remake it.

Do you take commissions?

Sure do. Send me a message using the contact form or email me at info@darkmatterdice.com and I can fill you in on the commission process and pricing.

Do you sell at a retail location?

As of right now, no. That may change in the future, so check back here or on socials for any updates.

 Are you going to offer d6 sets/d10 sets/individual dice/dice bags/whatever?

Probably. D6 sets are next, as soon as I make some molds. Sticker designs are in the works. I have made some prototype dice bags, dice boxes, and dice trays, and hope to offer these things soon. That said, if there's something you really want to see, let me know! Send me a message via the contact form or email me at info@darkmatterdice.com.

I want to learn to make dice! Tell me your secrets!

Hey, that's great! The best place to start is with Rybonator's YouTube channel, where he covers all the basics.

What games do you play?

I've played D&D (3.5, 4, and 5), Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Heroes Unlimited, and Call of Cthulhu. I also run games sometimes and have run all of the above except Pathfinder and Heroes.

What's your favourite D&D character class?

Paladins and Warlocks. As a storytelling mechanism, I like the concept of power that comes with a price.

What's the longest campaign you've ever played?

Eight and a half years. We finished everything our characters had to do, played out the epilogue, and felt very satisfied. Then we looked at each other and started a new game the very next week.
